Sermon Discussion Guide (for use at home this week)
Opening prayer: Thank you, Lord, for calling me to repentance and forgiving my sin; Amen.
About Me
Name a time when you had to apologize to someone. How did they react? How did this affect your relationship?
Into the Bible – Genesis 3:1-15
Verse 1: How did Satan twist God’s words in this verse? Compare with Genesis 2:15-17.
Verses 4-5: What does Satan imply in these verses? Identify the specific temptation.
Verses 6: We learn that Adam was standing there. What was his responsibility?
Verses 7: Adam & Eve experienced guilt & shame. What was the result of those feelings?
Verses 8-9: What does God do? Why?
Application
23 Jesus called them together and spoke to them in parables. “How can Satan drive out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25 And if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand. Mark 3
In Sunday’s sermon, Pastor talked about the keys of the kingdom of heaven. What are they, and what do they do? How does their use relate to our confession “to the point of death”?
In Sunday’s gospel reading from Mark 3, Jesus is rejected despite his powerful words. Name two ways that you have experienced trouble or rejection for holding to the Word of God. How did you react? What is our comfort?
Look at the verse above. Identify the truth about himself that Jesus is telling. What do we learn about unity in God’s church? From the entire gospel reading, name two ways we are encouraged in our Christian confession.
“We should fear and love God that we do not scheme to get our neighbor’s inheritance or house, or obtain it by a show of right…” A “show of right” is using the world’s laws & customs in order to obtain something in a way that looks proper, legal, or moral. Name two culturally-approved ideas that appear legal, but are not in line with the Word of God. What is our role as Christian confessors?
“To the Point of Death – Christians Confess with the Keys” Identify the keys. What is their role in Christian confession? Name 2-3 possible reactions when these keys are used.
Christians confess. Write a prayer asking Christ for wisdom to use the keys properly, and courage to use them confidently.
Prayer: O God, the strength of all who trust in you, mercifully hear our prayers. Be gracious to us in our weakness and give us strength to keep your commandments in all we say and do; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever; AMEN.
