Sermon Discussion Guide (for use at home this week)
Opening prayer: Thank you, Jesus, for grafting me into yourself. Work through me, that I may bear fruit to the glory of your name; AMEN.
About Me
Identify two hindrances to your will & ability to do good works. What emotions and attitudes are connected to these hindrances?
Into the Bible – 1 John 3:18-24
Verse 18: Put this verse into your own words. What is Johns saying?
Verses 19-20: What’s the relationship between our hearts (our emotions) and God’s truth? Which is greater?
Verse 21-22: What additional proof of faith can a Christian often see?
Verse 23: What are the two aspects of the command in this verse?
Verse 24: Identify two comforting statements in this verse. Why are they comforting?
Application
5 “I am the Vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in me and I in him is the one who bears much fruit, because without me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not remain in me, he is thrown away like a branch and withers. Such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. John 15
In Sunday’s sermon, Pastor began by talking about the concept of free will. What is free will? What is it not?
In Sunday’s gospel reading from John 15, Jesus describes himself as the Vine. What is the relationship of Vine & branches? What is the result of remaining in the vine – and not remaining in the vine? Identify two ways your connection to the vine can be strengthened.
Look at the verse above. Describe the relationship between remaining in Jesus and our prayer. How might one branch be injured when another branch doesn’t bear fruit? Name the result of not remaining in Christ, and think of 1-2 simple ways you can encourage a fellow branch to remain closer to Jesus.
“… but regard it as holy, and gladly hear and learn it.” Although we are not bound by the external form of a Sabbath day, the Third Commandment still speaks to our regard for the Word of God. The Sabbath was a day for rest from work and worship of the Lord. What do you do to make sure that your worship participation remains reverent and set apart? How can we do more to help each other regard the Word of God as holy?
“Witnesses of Resurrection Peace - Connected to the Vine.” What’s the relationship between our connection to the vine and our love, patience, and connection to each other? Describe how this connection might be tested by external opinions, ideas – or by the false belief of free will.
Jesus feeds his branches. Write a prayer, asking Jesus to feed his branches today. Include in your prayer the name or names of someone who has become disconnected from Jesus, and pray for them by name.
Prayer: O God, you form the minds of your faithful people into a single will. Make us love what you command and desire what you promise, that among the many changes of this world, our hearts may ever yearn for the lasting joys of heaven; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever; AMEN.
